Art for Consciousness

The use of art as a tool for expression and healing displays a beauty and realness that has moved me to tears. Often very child like and uncontrolled these works would not be considered masterpieces in our society but I disagree. From my perspective these works display incredible truth, awareness and wisdom - all of the qualities displayed by a master.

I have been amazed and awestruck by the clarity, insight, and consciousness that becomes apparent through this honest approach to art. In this context a stick figure can become so powerful, emotive, cathartic even. It can tell such an amazing story.

Art that is a true narrative of the inner experience is charged with freedom. Its rawness, wildness and truth can transmute stagnation, pain, denial and loss into awareness, into consciousness.

For many years I was a frustrated artist. Bound to being an artist through my passion but without the relevant technical skills to be a “fine artist”, I found something was missing in the experience of my creativity. It was often controlled, forced even rigid. Often it was filled with frustration for not being able to achieve what I wanted. Sometimes I was able to let it just flow through me and other times it was a real struggle.

Then I came upon Initiatic Art Therapy and undertook experience and training. What a wild journey. My entire life changed, I went through a lot in the process but my art found its freedom. Even though my work has always been an intuitive narrative of my life, it became focused more on process and not outcome. It became wild, expressive, uninhibited, uncontrolled. I now struggle to use a paintbrush when hands, fingers and breath are so much more fun. I found my expressive freedom and a remarkable modality that awakens and interacts with the creative spirit. Adopting this approach to the art has enabled me to discover myself on a deeper level again.

When art is used to explore the hidden realms something extraordinary happens. It can bring you directly into the moment, into presence with the internal world and it can bring you into awareness of connection with higher consciousness. It can bring greater awareness of symbols and the significance of the deeper meaning of things. It can bring forth healing and transformation and facilitate exploration of true potential by freeing the self to be really and truly expressed.

Whether you are an artist or not is irrelevant to the fact that art can help to transform your life, to awaken your consciousness.

I encourage you to explore, play, touch and feel life through art. Have you ever considered transforming your sadness into something beautiful on a canvas? Scribbling out your frustrations on a big piece of paper? Sculpting what that empty feeling inside might look like so you can get to know it? Drawing how you feel about certain things in order to gain clarity? If you have then you already know what a blessing art is in your life. If you have not then perhaps it’s worth considering.

Art is not just for those who have nurtured skills or talent. It is for us all. It can be accessed by anyone as a tool for expression and transformation, supporting the awakening of consciousness through awareness and the expression of the inner most self.
